Kriya Yoga is a non-sectarian practice that helps people of all religions to discipline themselves and to progress more deeply on their own spiritual path.

“We are children of God the Almighty Father, made in His image, and each one of us is endowed with the ability to make this creation more beautiful -- with our love, with our creativity, with our positive contribution. ”

~ Paramahamsa Prajnanananda

When you speak about other planes of existence,
can you please tell us about creation?

Paramahamsa Hariharananda Gurudev taught countless people, devotees and disciples, on the path of spirituality, in general, and Kriya Yoga, in particular, for over half a century. His intuitive knowledge, metaphorical interpretation of scriptures, practical outlook on spiritual life has become a source of inspiration to many. In the course of his travels he was asked many questions from different fields of life and was asked to solve varying problems. He, in his inimitable style, tried to reply to these queries. His teachings are unique in nature, mostly based on the inner aspect of life. We have compiled questions from devotees and disciples asked at various places and times together with Gurudev"s answers, in order to bring a greater understanding of his teachings. These questions may be your questions at present too. His answers are for each and every one, and they cross the limitations of time.

Creation is a special process. There are different explanations in different scriptures about creation. In the Bible and the Torah there is the description of creation in Genesis. Many Hindu scriptures also describe creation, but the simplest explanation is the one described in the Taittiriya Upanishad. It says that it was the wish of God, or the will of God, to manifest this creation. It is a thought that arose in God that manifested in the form of space. From space came sound, and so on. In essence, this creation came from the formless space to the form of Earth. On Earth, creation evolved from one-celled animals to human beings. Creation is a beautiful process of the evolution of consciousness. It is especially directed towards the divine play of bliss.

This scripture also says that as creation is the wish of God, it is the wish of divinity - the wish of divine bliss, that this creation be filled with bliss and love. However, out of ignorance people forget the purpose of creation and live a life of misery.

Instead of thinking about outer creation, think of your own creativity. Every person has the ability to create in two ways: make your own life, and at the same time, create something new around you in yours environment. Creative people can create art and material objects. Let us think about the following three personal creations:

  1. The first is to create your own life: make your life better. Think in your heart, "I'll will not make my life miserable. I should improve my life. I should be a better person; free from ego, emotion, frustration, and anger, and I should be filled with love, joy, happiness, and peace." When this thought or will comes into the heart of a person, he becomes conscious of his own negative qualities and of his divine potentiality. He tries to eradicate evils and develop divine values and virtues in life. In this way he becomes a better person. This is creation within yourself.
  2. The second is the re-creation of a beautiful relationship with God and creation, with people, animals, plants and so forth.
  3. The third personal creation is to develop creativity in the form of art or other materials, articles, or literature. This creativity is thoughts and ideas coming into the mind and heart of a person. It is personal creativity, and the creation outside is cosmic creativity. They are one and the same. You can create good, or you can create bad. You are your own friend: you are your own enemy. Instead of thinking of external creation, think first of creation within yourself.

Let us go back again to external creation. From thought came the ultimate creation in the form of matter. From thought, from the subtle, creation slowly came into the gross form. This creation is a downward process, from formless to form. Creation should again go from form to formless, meaning from body to soul, from universe to the creator of the universe. Instead of human consciousness coming downward from formless to form and remaining in form too long. A person should try to reverse the process of creation, from form to formless. This will lead to the path of perfection.
