Plain Living and High Thinking

'Paramahamsa Prajnanananda');Raidas was a holy man who lived in India long ago. Although he was humble cobbler who earned his living making shoes, he was also a realized mystic who composed many beautiful, devotional verses. The beloved saint was a married man with a small family, living in a small hut. In the eyes of others, he was living a very poor life, but in the eyes of God he was the richest person in the country.

Raidas has become quite well-known in India for his spirituality and God intoxication, so one day another holy man, who had heard about him, paid him a visit. This man was really shocked to find Raidas living in a tiny hut, with barely enough money to support his family and very little food to eat. Feeling extreme sympathy at seeing Raidass meager living conditions, he asked him why he was leading such a poor life. Raidas only smiled and told him that he was quite happy and content with what he had, and neither wanted nor required anymore. But the holy man insisted that he wanted to help, so he offered to give Raidas a touchstone that would convert iron into gold upon contact. Although Raidas told his guest to keep his gift, the man insisted that he should have it. He even pointed out to Raidas that it would be very helpful to him when he really needed money. Having more money, he would not have to work so hard; leaving more time for prayer and meditation. Raidas finally agreed and said for safekeeping, he would place it under the straw roof of his hut. The visitor was happy thinking he was able to help him and soon set off for his home.

A few months had passed and the holy man decide to pay Raidas another visit. He was sure that Raidass life had definitely changed for the better: with better food to eat, better clothes to wear, and better living conditions. He was anxious to witness the transformation. However, he was completely shocked when he arrived and saw the same small hut, the same kind of food, and Raidas working just as hard! When the holy man questioned why his lifestyle hadnt changed, Raidas gently put his hand on the mans shoulder and said, My friend nothing has changed because I am happy with what I have. There is no need for anything more.

Reflection

Those who are spiritually rich lose their desire for material possession. Infinitely blissful and content living in the awareness of Gods presence, they understand the value and beauty of plain living and high thinking.
